Smart Locks?

The IoT can be described as an extension of the internet and other network connections to different sensors and devices — or “things” — affording even simple objects, such as lightbulbs, locks, and vents,  a higher degree of computing and analytical capabilities.

Since the term was first coined in 1999 the Internet of Things (IoT) has expanded tremendously, billions of devices are now connected, collecting and sharing information. These devices are part of a scenario where every device, including non-standard computing devices, work and talk to other related devices in a synergistic manner. Devices like watches, thermostats, locks, doors, and even cars have been included into the Internet of Things.

Unfortunately, this interconnectivity between devices and the internet has left users and devices vulnerable to attacks from hackers. This includes devices like smart connected home locks which can be exploited to allow hackers to pick these locks with ease. Consultants at F-Secure, a cybersecurity firm, have dicovered a design flaw in a brand of smart lock that makes it vulnerable to attacks. Since the smart lock cant receive any new system updates, the design flaw cannot be fixed, thus leaving homeowners at risk of a burglary.
