Florida Senator Fights for Censorship Bill

https://www.govtech.com/social/Florida-GOP-Senator-Pushes-Social-Media-Censorship-Bill.html

GOP state Senator Joe Gruters partnered up with right wing provocateur and Florida congressional candidate Laura Loomerast week to encourage Florida lawmakers to pass legislation in 2020 that will prevent large social media companies, such as Facebook and Twitter, from censoring the social media posts of users. The proposed “Stop Social Media Censorship Act” would make social media companies “liable for damages in civil lawsuits if they delete or censure religious speech or political speech or use an algorithm to “disfavor or censure” such speech”. Senator Gruters and congressional candidate Loomer hope that this legislation will protect the free speech rights of all Floridians on their personal social media accounts.

I think that this “Stop Social Media Censorship Act” will be very useful and important, especially this year. Because 2020 is the year of the next presidential elections that will go on in the United States, I believe that it is very important that all states enact this act so that every citizen has the right to voice their personal opinions on the presidential candidates. I think that large social media companies, such as Twitter and Facebook, are definitely infringing on our First Amendment rights that guarantee us the right to freely express our feelings and opinions. As long as the user’s social media posts are not harming, harassing, or discriminating against others, we should have the right to post what we want on our own personal social media accounts.

Did you know that World War II’s best codebreaker was a woman?

During World War II Elizebeth Smith Friedman helped invent powerful new methods of breaking codes. Her work heavily influenced the F.B.I and later on the C.I.A. With the launch of her codebreaking unit, Friedman and her colleagues intercepted tens of thousands of encrypted radio messages every year. Jason Fagone, author of “The Woman Who Smashed Codes”, an amazing life story about Elizebeth Smith Friedman, states, whenever someone in the government didn’t know what they would be doing they would say “Send for Mrs. Friedman” and she’d fix everything.

How Social Media Activism fueled #MeToo

https://www.vox.com/identities/2019/10/15/20910298/tarana-burke-morgan-jerkins

Tarana Burke started the #MeToo movement in 2006. 12 years later, the movement has helped many survivors be able to come out and share their stories with the world, in a way that did not require a face-to-face explanation, which might be extremely difficult for some. In 2006, social media was not quite at the level it is now, but to continuously fight for survivors even when there was a small audience, is astonishing. Tarana Burke was the catalyst the 2000s needed to unapologetically bring this dialouge to the table. Check out this article by Vox about how Tarana is pushing for folks to be held accountable for their actions.
