The Evolution of Technology

As most people know technology is always changing. It’s very easy to get caught up in the new factor, and we often forget to appreciate how far we’ve come. The video below highlights some of the most drastic differences between past and present technology.

From the Computer Room to the Commute

When I was growing up, many families had desktop computers, though they weren’t a necessity. What’s even stranger than that is the fact that the desktop computer often had a whole entire room dedicated to it. A lot of my childhood was spent with my cousins in the “computer room” playing games like Diner Dash or Hidden Mysterious. This idea is very different from the new generation’s access to laptops and tablets. For example, a close friend of mine explained to me that while taking her children on a trip to the zoo, each child gets their own smartphone/tablet to play games on during the commute. It’s odd. In the short span of 10 to 15 years, computer games have gone from the “computer room” to zoo commutes. And let’s not forget about the quantity of computers family’s now have access too. Everyone in my family has sole ownership of at least 2 computers, this includes phones and laptops of course, which essentially are handheld computers.

From Entertainment To learning

Another interesting discussion is the shift of technological use for entertainment to business. Way back in the early 2000s cell phones were banned at school. And so were most devices that you could play games on such as computers, gamboys, and even some calculators which had the ability to download basic games if you knew what you were doing. Teachers tried their best to discourage the rapid technological use. Now they embrace it. Many teachers now will allow students to use their cellphones and smart devices to take quizzes, use the calculator function, or even access educational websites and games.

Internet Storage Is the Same as Real Storage.

The video mentions this as well, but the way we store data is perhaps one of the most evolving aspects of technology there is. Moving forward from floppy disc, to flash drives, to SD cards, to renting invisible internet storage. Me and a fellow co-worker used to laugh at the subject a couple years ago, stating that “the cloud” and “google drive” were essentially the same thing as renting a local storage unit to keep your extra junk. Both methods call for the same advice: get rid of stuff and buy your own storage instead of renting someone else’s.

Back in the day…

We all have heard the good ole “back in the day” stories. My parents and older Co-Workers often like to inform me of the days that consisted of typewriters, dark rooms, post office mail, pay phones, etc. The odd thing is that technology changes so fast that even Gen-Zers and Millennials like myself are often able to describe their own “back in the day” stories when relating to technology. Here’s a mind blowing fact, the internet was invented only 37 years ago so anyone in their 40s has lived through a massive transition. So, try to cut your grandpa some slack when it comes to Facebook.

Cyber-Attacks Linked to Anxiety, Depresion, and PTSD

With the topic of mental health being a main topic in American discourse, some mental health officials have emphasized links between mental health disorders like anxiety, depression, and even PTSD with millions of americans who have been victimized by cyber-attacks. These victims face the incredibly arduous and dreadful process of clearing their names, credit histories, and more after a data breach. In addition these victims face feelings of hopelessness, vulnerability, and powerlessness. One cybersecurity professional goes as far as saying:

The psychological effects of cyber attacks may even rival those of traditional terrorism.

Dr. Maria Bada, Research Associate at the Cambridge Cybercrime Centre at The University of Cambridge

We’ve even seen, in extreme cases, that data breaches can destroy the lives of its victims; As it did for victims of the data breach that affected popular dating site for adulturers, Ashley Madison. Some victims of this data breach faced divorces, resignations, and even suicides.

Much of this information is anecdotal, but mental health researchers have begun to study it. If you’d like to learn more about it, follow the link bellow:

Dutch Railways Uses Data Analytics to Enhance Services

Dutch Railways boasts an impressive network of trains that oversee over 1.2 million passengers a day. Some of the ways the railway has been able to better it’s service recently comes from the implementation of a new data analytic strategy. This project is the brainchild of the head of the Data & Analytic department, Marjin Scheele, and utilizes a Microsoft Azure cloud system. The Adoption Cloud Ecosystem (ACE) was created in 2017 and has transformed railway operations in some pretty neat ways.

The first main advance to come out of ACE was a sensor analysis system. There are many points along the rail where senors are located that measure how much pressure a particular wheel is putting on the rail. This data is used by mechanical teams to ensure that the train cars are properly maintained. Although the sensors had been in use for many years, the data analysis needed was too complex to produce meaningful results. The use of ACE has produced real time analysis and usable results. This increases the safety of the railway as well.

Another area that ACE has proven useful is in waste management. Senors were used again, but this time in the trains toilet systems. The data analysis showed that the system was being processed way to much. This realization and subsequent changes have saved Dutch Railways a huge amount of money. Data has also been used to show where and when trains are needed the most. This has lead to more efficient train scheduling. ACE has most recently been used to create an app for passengers that shows train car capacity when on the platform, thus increasing boarding efficiency.

Marjin Scheele is happy with the results of the Data & Analytics departments projects. He says that although progress has been made, he hopes to continue promoting a data driven culture within Dutch Railways so that more data analytical ideas can be generated. Personally, I think these projects have been great for the railway and show the never-ending benefits of data analytics. I can’t wait to see what new ideas Scheele and his team come up with next

A Private Life is a Happy Life

Even if you don’t think you have anything to hide while browsing, no one wants constant surveillance when using the internet. In order to keep your online life more private and secure, there are a few tips that you should keep in mind.

For one, learn how to secure your browsing, messaging, and devices. There are many steps that you can take in order to contain your privacy. To secure your browsing, it is important to remember that joining public WI-FI networks is risky. It is easy for someone to monitor the web pages you browse and also get ahold of private information. When looking for ways to secure your messaging, keep in mind that calls and messages can be intercepted or wiretapped at anytime. To prevent this, try using a different app that doesn’t collect metadata. Lastly, one tip to use to secure your devices is to get rid of the fingerprint phone unlock. It is easy for someone to forcefully make you unlock your phone with your fingerprint so you can prevent this by turning that feature completely off.

What Do They Actually Do With Our Data?

Privacy concerns regarding smart devices have been a major concern since they first were invented. We are constantly worrying about if they are listening to us, spying on us, selling our data, and much more. With all these constant worries we still as a society proceed to buy the numerous smart devices that have been invented. Since we all continue to buy these devices it is important to at least know what they are doing with the data that we do allow them to collect, and some advice on what we can do about it. All the upcoming data was released by “the ambient.”

All Amazon devices send a recording to the Amazon Cloud, but only when the “wake” word becomes activated. This is by saying “Alexa,” or “Echo.” You can access all the recordings that Amazon devices have saved. Amazon also says that you can opt-out of your recordings being analyzed for a more personal experience. Knowing that I am able to access my own recordings does make me feel a little bit better. Also, the idea that its not recording me all the time. What do you think? Do you feel better knowing this information?

Google devices do seem to be safer due to the fact that they do need keep voice recordings unless you have opted into the program. They also are similar to Amazon devices that it only listens when the activation word is said.

Given this information it is important to know that you have access to everything that is being recorded and that with some devices you can opt into certain programs. It is important to know what each devices protocol is prior to purchasing it. It is also important to look into what you can opt in and out of for each device, and to do so accordingly so your information is more protected.

With all that being said you are able to have your trendy device while being safe, it is just important to do the research. Also, we do have the ability to posses some control over what data is being stored and what is being said. Privacy still is a concern but it is important to know all the things you can do on each device to increase your security even more.

Computer Programming Has More Pros than Cons

Despite its negative connotation, technology has had a tremendously positive impact on the world today. In this article, concrete examples of the different areas of life that technology has bettered are provided to help support its claim that: computer programming helps society. Not only has computer programming facilitated people’s access to information and tools that were hard to acquire in the past, but it has also helped further its reach in education across the world. With new online programs being offered to people around the world, computer programming has helped provide education for people who have never had access to it.

White Space

There are so many articles on whitespace. It’s a very common term and I’d be hardpressed to find a person that doesn’t have an idea of what it is. The concept of “use whitespace” isn’t revolutionary. There are so many articles detailing what whitespace is but not really explaining how to use it beyond “yes, it’s okay for things to be minimalist”. Trendy websites are all very minimalist and I get the feeling that one day this will be super dated – “wow that website looks like it was from the 2010’s”. It’s really silly. In the quest for whitespace and minimalism (the two go hand-in-hand), everything looks the same.

For what it is, the article is not bad. It very clearly details what whitespace is and lists the benefits of it; it could be worse. More importantly – the article could be better. The article could detail how to develop an eye for whitespace – but it doesn’t. That’s the biggest fault, the purpose of the article being to criticize without teaching the reader to be better. It just says “blank space” without saying how much.

The purpose of content farms is to produce lots of content – not quality content, lots of it. This article suffers for it.
