Why tech’s gender problem is nothing new

Mechanized sexism is extremely common in the work place. Interestingly, Facebook allows the targeting of job abs by gender. This results in discrimination in online job advertisements for male dominated jobs. It is important to know that tis practice has long been illegal in print media – but Facebook’s targeting tools encourage it.

This gender discrimination affects whether women can see this online job advertisements which ultimately is unfair. Facebook has recently been under fire for their illegal advertising practices. The social media platform has repeatedly refused to take responsibility for their actions. #LIS4022spr20

Artificial Intelligence Helps Develop Antibiotic

Scientists have developed a new antibiotic with the help of AI. The antibiotic was created after using a complex algorithm to analyze “more than one hundred million chemical compounds” in just a couple of days. Scientists claim that the antibiotic is able to kill at least 35 types of deadly viruses.

It is the first time in history that artificial intelligence has helped develop an antibiotic, and there are hopefully many to come. Until now, scientists had to manually test every possible combination of chemical compounds in order to create an efficient drug. This is big step for the healthcare sector.

Artificial Intelligence might be changing the development cycle for many companies

As people continue to figure out new ways to implement artificial intelligence, one interesting field will be IT. As these developers find ways to make the development life cycle ever changing with AI it might change the way we think about IT. Many companies have a proven way to do things. Impact of AI on the Insurance Industry

The three main areas that AI will have an impact on are the automation of insurance processes, better understanding of risks, and increased customer service. AI can process data and analyze it much faster than a human can, and it is able to gather data more data. This increases accuracy and cuts down an time and money spent on a project. In the future, it is expected that AI will be able to come up with situations and outcomes to a scenario, in order to assess the risk being taken. Today, AI is being used in vehicles to determine if a customer should be covered.

One of the main effects AI can have relates to customer service. AI would be available 24/7 and offer a positive experience because of its speed and ease of use. https://medium.com/@inmediatesg/how-strong-is-the-impact-of-artificial-intelligence-in-the-insurance-industry-34bd93ad47ac

The Fourth (E)state

From grade school into our adult lives, we’re spoon-fed the idea that the freedom of the press in America is what keeps our country strong and our government (somewhat) honest. The “fourth estate” serves the powerless, not the powerful. This notion was a force of nature -a fact so interwoven into the fabric of our ideals that it could never be torn out- until the 45th edition of our presidency took hold of the White House nearly three years ago.

This semester, we’ve discussed what filter bubbles are, who creates them, and how they shape public opinion. But what filter bubbles are not is state media. At its inception, the purpose of Fox News was, while undoubtedly for manipulation, not intended for the state. Under the current administration, however, that is exactly what it has become. Sure, the president directs a critical tweet every so often at a  network anchor, but the truth remains. Fox News has become virtually inseparable from the narratives and goals set forth by the Trump Presidency and will likely do so until his term, either in a year or five, is up. Click the link to read more on how Fox and Trump have become unrecognizable from each other.

Digital > Traditional. But it’s Not That Simple.

With the way the advertising industry is changing, digital advertising is beating traditional ad spending and it doesn’t look like they are going to be losing anytime soon. However, there a few problems facing adtech that could slow them down, such as transparency, ad fraud, duplication, and bid success. Adtech companies have to figure out how to overcome these problems. A few ways they are doing is by transitioning to programmatic guarantees which combats transparency and ad fraud, and another way is  using Equinix and Unitas Global. These are solutions intended to improve network performance, security, and environment reliability. In addition, they provide 24/7 fraud protection. This is a big deal for companies such as Google, AWS, and Microsoft.
