A Look at What Makes a Developer Successful

Developers largely have the same idea of what success looks like, but how they get there is a somewhat controversial area. To some, the road to success is early mornings and late nights to grind out code, but to others it is a carefully maintained set of hours for work followed by eight hours of sleep nightly. The latter group is largely made up of older, more experienced developers while new, younger developers tend to adopt the mindset that isn’t as reliant on a decent sleep schedule.

With that being said, many coders and developers are given a flexible option for their scheduling many times, making the possibility of working night hours possible for individuals who tend to function better during the night hours. In a blog post by Proto.io, the group asked actual developers what their ideal productive day looked like, and what makes a successful developer. In this blog post, the divide was about even between those who worked during the day, and suggested that developers looking to work at night should offer their employer a trial period to see if their productivity increases during the later hours.

Regardless of what means it takes to get there, success as a whole seemed to be a cohesive definition among those in the tech industry–focused on creating a satisfactory product for the client.

New Social Media Censorship Laws in Pakistan

https://www.dw.com/en/pakistans-new-internet-laws-tighten-control-over-social-media/a-52375508

The government in Pakistan has recently passed a new set of social media censorship laws that aim to censor any social media posts that feature terrorism, hate speech, fake news, extremism, or incitement to violence and national security. These new laws, The “Citizens Protection (Against Online Harm) Rules, 2020”, also require that all social media companies set up a physical presence in Pakistan, likely through the construction of a physical company building, and appoint a contact person. These laws have caused a great deal of concern in many Pakistani citizens due to the infridgement on free speech that the new laws create.

Not only do the new laws lead to the mass censorship of social media and require social media companies to establish a physical presence, but they also put a lot of pressure on social media companies to abide by the laws. The “Citizens Protection (Against Online Harm) Rules, 2020” requires that social media companies remove any flagged social media content within 24 hours and six hours in emergencies.

In my personal opinion, I think that it is extremely unfair for the Pakistani government to create laws where the free speech of its citizens are restricted. I understand that these new laws hope to prevent the spread of hate speech, terrorism, and fake news, but, like the article points out, the terms “hate speech” and “terrorism” are broad subjective terms. What may be interpreted as hate speech or terrorism to one person, may be interpreted simply as free speech by another person. I also think that the Pakistani government enacted these new laws behind closed doors and without public consultation because they knew that these new laws would lead to worry and unrest in the Pakistani citizens. In our modern 2020 digital media age, it is really important for citizens of every country to be able to express opinions, news, and information online without extreme censorship.

Artificial Intelligence will be an Era of transforming the Global Economy

Overtime Artificial Intelligence will gradually add 16% to the global economic output, in other words add about 13 Trillion dollars to the global economy. This is exponentially huge let alone a huge driving reason for why most nations are adopting AI laws and research to their nations. However, most nations have barely started to contemplate AI in the future and are therefore falling behind on the “AI Race.”

Various components influence the AI-driven efficiency of nations, such as its effectiveness on innovation and labor automation as well as other factors that contribute to the large scale impact of why nations want AI. AI is perceived as the driver of future development as well as innovation and job creation in the 21st century which is why it is so crucial to nations to adopt.

It is now the responsibility of business leaders and policy makers to take measurable actions to address AI in innervating it into the economy. Without the integration of AI into economies of nations around the world it is safe to say their economy will suffer. For AI will be an era of transforming the global economy.

Healthcare Technology to Move Towards Mobile-based Medicine

With the beginning of a new year, many people are wondering what technology and innovations will be popping up in the upcoming months. Medical professionals are not excluded from this group, and are often looking to use the best and most recent technology for their practice. Mobidev, a technology news source, released a list at the beginning of the year of the most anticipated trends in tech for 2020, and the overall trend seems to be a shift towards more mobile access to medicine.

Specifically, Mobidev predicted that these changes would include a larger use of the IOMT, or Internet of Medical things and Cloud Computing in healthcare, meaning that your upcoming doctor’s appointment could include a more cohesive look at your medical history for your healthcare provider. This is important for possible interactions between medications or side effects concerning existing conditions. Mobidev does mention however, that this shift could be a threat to HIPAA standards and create a greater possibility of violations for protected health information.

In addition to this, mobile doctor appointments are predicted to become exponentially more common in the upcoming year. This is a huge improvement for individuals who live in rural areas or have providers with long wait times for appointments. In their article, Mobidev actually tracked the approximate wait times for appointments to be around 24 days as of 2017. This time could be cut shorter or completely eliminated with the implementation of mobile appointments and diagnoses.

Running on Technology: Assistive Tech and its Role in Sports

Technology plays a huge role in many people’s lives, but often times it plays an even larger role for those with disabilities. Within the disabled community, assistive technology has become a necessity for athletes competing at a higher level. Between extremely aerodynamic prosthetics, and more specific technologies for individual sport uses, there is no shortage of innovation among these pieces of technology.

As far as the more niche, advanced technology for specific circumstances go, the Paragolfer is an excellent example of assistive technology. This technology, designed by a wounded veteran, was made so that a paralyzed individual wouldn’t be restricted from playing standing sports such as golf. This device was featured in Cisco UKI’s highlights of assistive technology in 2016, and upon further research has now extended from a single device for personal use to a branded piece of technology for sale to paralyzed users.

Researchers Develop an App That Helps Users Identify Iot Devices Nearby and Protect Their Data From It

There are thousands of Internet of Things devices being connected to the internet daily. Many of these devices come from companies with very loose security protocols for their devices, as their primary concern is profits, not data privacy and protection. With a multitude of these devices being introduced to modern environments daily, researches at Carnegie Mellon have developed an app that will help its users protect themselves against unwanted IoT tracking from these various devices.

The app, which is currently in its beta stage, is called the Internet of Things (IoT) Assistant. Its purpose is ti scan for any unidentified IoT devices nearby, tell app users what they do, and guide the users to opt out of data collection, if possible.

The Toxic Mirror of Social Media

The “thin ideal” is something that has been pushed into the minds of teens since the beginning of social media. Social media and negative effects on body image are highly correlated, and this article discusses this issue and how technology has made body issues even more common than they were before.

This article also focuses on the new rise of fitness and health social media accounts. This rise has caused a new wave of comparison and body issues among teens who are active on social media. Most adolescents don’t realize that the people on social media’s appearance isn’t always how they look in real life; and that they shouldn’t hold themselves to an unachievable standard. This issue has only grown since this article was released, and needs to be brought to more teens’ attention so it doesn’t get out of hand.
