What’s Coming With The Next Generation Of Medical Devices? 6 Predictions

This is a very interesting news article that predicts the future of medical devices and how they are going to be used. You can find fascinating devices and predictions in this article. My favorite part is section 2 where it talks about new advancements in ingestibles and how someone can swallow a pill and that pill has a small device in itself that can monitor your illness and report that to the device over bluetooth.

The U.S. Technology Cold War with China

The U.S. is currently in a “tech cold war” with China, as they have been using data from AI and 5G to dominate the world. China has a law allowing the Chinese Government access to data collected from companies located in China and global companies based in China. Author and columnist Gordon Chang said that “The U.S. is behind in critical areas.” He said “a whole society mobilization” is needed across the nation to confront China in the arena of technology. This has let to the proposal of a new law that will keep the data collected in the U.S. secure and for the use of the United States only. Would You Want Google to Store your Health Records?

The current administration is pushing to reform the way patients have control over their health records. With proposed changes, you can download your records and store them with a third party online company, i.e. Google. But the biggest problem with that is that those records once downloaded, are no longer protected by HIPAA.

The tech industry has been lobbying to make these changes for your convience to share data with whomever needs it. According to Politico though this would “also open up a Wild West of data sharing on the most intimate health care details for millions of Americans”.

As usual, senators are lobbying to create more new agencies, growing the size of government on the backs of the tech industry. This time in the name of data protection and privacy. And no surprise, the President’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, is involved in the push for this. One has to wonder what he is investing in that this would create a win for him or his friends.

People and health care companies are pushing back though bringing lawsuits to stop this. But some say it is only to protect the positions they are in now.

Ultimately, this push for control may result in losing control for patients. This is a hard pill to swallow and sacrifices on one end of the stick or another with have to be made.

How to Start a Social Movement

“A movement will demand more of you than anything you’ve ever done before” -Frank MicKinley

Social media is and has been impacting our society from the moment Facebook gained momentum. By creating a social movement, you have the ability to gain folks you would have never had access to. With Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, you can reach folks in Europe, Africa, South America, etc. You can learn from social movements happening across the globe, across the seas, and across the street. The ways of “traditional” activism are now an option, not a must.

The author of this piece stresses that to be build a successful movement, you need to: see a need and meet it, give people space to make a better world, and encourage them to do it often.

Who would have thought that by creating social networks via the Internet that entire social movements would be created and facilitated through these platforms???

Creating a space whether, physically or virtually, provides those with your same goal a place and a chance to make the world a better place. Check it out! It is only a 6 minute read!

Which state has the most bullying?

The effects of bullying are dangerous as we know. The states with the Best and worst effect were calculated for a few particular side effects of bullying for teens in the grades of 9th through 12th. First, Louisiana and Maryland are tied for the highest percentage of physical fights on school ground while Kansas has the least percent.

Louisiana is also the worst for cyberbullying and in the top five worst for face-to-face bullying. Next, New Mexico has the highest percent of high school students who miss and skip school because they fear of the bullying and Massachusetts has the lowest percent. Additionally, Louisiana and Arkansas are tied for first for the highest percentage of attempted suicide of high school students and Massachusetts and Vermont are tied for the lowest percent.
Lastly, California, New York, and Texas have the highest cost of truancy for school because of bullying and North Dakota has the lowest cost. These statistics should show states and the government where there are gaps and where things can be improved. While at least one child is bullied every 7 minutes in the United States, only every 1 in 25 adults will intervene and do something to stop the bullying, no matter what form, and only 11 percent of their peers would do the same.

Would you make the difference and help stop bullying around the U.S.?

Week 8: Privacy-Invading School Surveillance

With the increasing amount of threats and attacks towards schools in America, it is understandable that actions needs to be taken. It is reasonable to want to improve security in schools, but some schools districts, including one in New York has it all wrong. They have begun deploying cameras and facial recognition systems around campus to monitor students and their activities. They do this in the name of safety, but are really violating the privacy of the students. Making this more troubling is the inability to opt out. The systems are already installed and the students or their parents are not provided with a choice. This is only scratching the surface unfortunately, districts have also been installing microphones around schools with audio recognition algorithms. Another major invasion of privacy that isn’t even that effective. These systems often mistake coughs or high-pitched voices for aggressive behaviors. Schools are going to such great lengths to surveil and monitor their students, but fail to realize that is not a viable a solution. It only creates a feeling of authoritarianism and distrust between their student and the school. I would be scared to go to school knowing my face is being monitored, my voice is being monitored, and much more. Even social media and networking monitoring solutions are being used to further invade the privacy of students. These online solutions even break past the confines of the campus and can monitor the activities of students while off campus or at home. This is far beyond acceptable and needs to stop. This authoritarian surveillance is not the right way to keep schools safe.

Social Media Marketing – Is it Worth it?

In short, yes! If we consider the amount of time people spend on average on social media each day (around 3 hours) there is no question about it. Although socials are already very saturated with marketing content and influencers pushing brands products and services, with the right strategy and a little bit of creativity you can be sure to stop your target market from scrolling on their feeds. Engaging with social media users that are in your target market is a great way to make consumer to company connections that otherwise would be hard to do.

New Technology to Make Traveling More Accessible

Although travel has come a long ways as far as accommodations for disabled travelers goes, there are still limitations as to where individuals with many disabilities can go. Cities in particular can be hard to maneuver for those in wheelchairs, or who depend on a visual aid to navigate. CNN Business covered a variety of new technologies that are helping close that gap for many individuals. While much of the technology featured in this article is still in the early phases of development and will not be available to the general public, it is still a milestone for those chosen to test the equipment and know what will soon be the norm of travel.

Among the technology featured are devices such as a wheelchair that is capable of ascending and descending stairs, a smart walking cane with GPS technology, and a robotic exomuscle suit that would make walking or hiking a possibility for those who otherwise would find these activities difficult.
