Week 9: Encryption-Breaking Legislation

As if banning encryption was not bad enough, a recent bill called the Graham-Blumenthal Bill is aimed at breaking encryption. It completely undermines the law allowing free speech on the internet. Not only would this hinder free speech, it would also destroy the security of all citizens. Encryption is extremely important to protect our private information online. Government agencies need to realize that not all encrypted traffic is malicious. The argument that “if you are using encryption, you are doing something bad” is complete and utter nonsense. Your bank account information and transactions are encrypted when you do online banking, what would happen if these were not encrypted and visible to anyone watching the connection? Due to the close relationship between policymakers and law-enforcement, they may have difficulty understanding how legislation like this can impact civil liberties. Many law enforcement agencies want more control and have always acted very authoritarian, unfortunately, they tend to pass this on to those in charge of making the big decisions. It is important to do everything possible to ensure legislation like the Graham-Blumenthal Bill does not get passed. Encryption has to stay, as it is necessary, it also can’t be blamed for the malicious actions of people. It is only an algorithm.

Social media platforms take a stance

With social media rising, cyberbullying isn’t going away. One way many platforms are trying to stop and decline the amount of cyberbullying is by recognizing offensive captions and comments. Specifically, Instagram has recently rolled out an AI feature that will notify users when a comment is offensive or potentially offensive. If users do wish to continue to post that specific comment or caption and it is reported, you can get shadowbanned. This is a feature to try and keep people from posting these comments and thinking twice about what they are going to say.

Having social media platforms taking a stance against bullying and banning those who continue to say rude or mean things can help change the path of cyberbullying. It can make it become increasingly harder to be mean online. Pictures are a harder feature to scan through a filter, but these platforms also have the ability to report a specific post or entire profile and once they get enough reports, they can get temporarily banned or even permanently banned.

If you notice someone being mean or hateful on social media, help others and report their post or profile.

Social Media and the WHO??

Wow. Wow. Wow. When Vine was popular, the only folks who interacted with it was the young folks on the internet. Vine walked so TikTok can S O A R. With TikTok, you have a range of ages from 10 to at least 55. You have high school teachers using the app and being silly with their students. I have had colleagues who are millennial using the app as well.

The jump from “oh this is for entertainment for younger folks” to “we can use this as a way to combat misinformation about the coronavirus” is mind-blowing.

Large social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter are a part of the fight against misinformation on the coronavirus. This is the kind of backing that needs to happen during natural disasters as well. Using each and every avenue to keep information accurate and consistent.

I have not used TikTok myself, but the app is an amazing way to not only laugh, but now to learn adequate information about the coronavirus.

Remember: WASH YOUR HANDS THOROUGHLY and get ready for the new age of governments using social media for their own activism 🙂

China Implements a New Set of Internet Censorship Laws

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/02/china-new-internet-censorship-rules-raise-fears-of-renewed-crackdown

According to reports, the Chinese government has put forth a new series of internet censorship laws aimed at encouraging “positive” content online while barring material deemed to be “negative” or illegal. These new internet censorship laws have not only been censoring more and more online content discussing the coronavirus, but it has also led to the censorship of LGBTQ content, feminist content, and any content that features “sexual innuendo”. Not only that, but popular websites in China, such as the fan fiction webste Archive of our Own, have been blocked completely.

I personally think that the Chinese government is completely moving in the wrong direction. Many Chinese citizens are already skeptical of the Chinese government due to the fact that the government has been censoring so much information online about the coronavirus. The Chinese government should be decreasing the amount of censorhip online so that Chinese citizens can start to trust the government more. The Chinese government is unjustifibly trying to control what information citizens have the right to see and hear. The government thinks that by censoring content online that is “negative” they are protecting its citizens but really they are just depriving citizens of their right to information and their right to express themselves freely.

AI is Transforming the Financial Service Industries of the Economy

In a survey by World Economic Forum and the Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance explains that 64% or nearly two-thirds of financial service leaders will be mass adopters of AI. In adopting AI, financial service firms will be able to use AI for risk management, customer service, revenue generation, and much more.

Over 150 senior financial service executives responded on the impact AI will have on the industry, where they concluded that there will be a gap between those who implement AI quickly and those that lag behind. This gap will have a huge impact on investment levels and returns for those companies. But not everyone is ready, the survey also showed that 70% of respondents believed they are less prepared for AI.

AI entering the economy and transforming the financial service industries also has its drawbacks. According to the survey traditional financial service firms expect AI to reduce 9% of net jobs by 2030. As companies begin to adopt more AI to increase profitability and expand their companies, more changes are expected to be come within the industry and its consumers.
