Taiwan bans official use of Zoom

Zoom can’t seem to catch a break.

In a statement, the Taiwanese executive branch has banned the use of Zoom by all of its government agencies. Instead recommending they use other approved software like Google Meet and Microsoft Teams. The Taiwanese government is the first to completely ban the use of Zoom, following similar bans by SpaceX and Nasa, and the New York City department of education. In addition, Australia has also added bans to its use by parliamentarians and senators, as well as the Australian defense force.

This all stems from Zoom’s privacy policies, or lack their of. While the company claims to be protecting its users, researchers and journalists have recently pointed out glaring privacy issues. On possible issue includes Zoom’s employment of over 700 employees based in China, an arrangement that “may make Zoom responsive to pressure from Chinese authorities.”
