The current administration is pushing to reform the way patients have control over their health records. With proposed changes, you can download your records and store them with a third party online company, i.e. Google. But the biggest problem with that is that those records once downloaded, are no longer protected by HIPAA.
The tech industry has been lobbying to make these changes for your convience to share data with whomever needs it. According to Politico though this would “also open up a Wild West of data sharing on the most intimate health care details for millions of Americans”.
As usual, senators are lobbying to create more new agencies, growing the size of government on the backs of the tech industry. This time in the name of data protection and privacy. And no surprise, the President’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, is involved in the push for this. One has to wonder what he is investing in that this would create a win for him or his friends.
People and health care companies are pushing back though bringing lawsuits to stop this. But some say it is only to protect the positions they are in now.
Ultimately, this push for control may result in losing control for patients. This is a hard pill to swallow and sacrifices on one end of the stick or another with have to be made.
