GOP state Senator Joe Gruters partnered up with right wing provocateur and Florida congressional candidate Laura Loomerast week to encourage Florida lawmakers to pass legislation in 2020 that will prevent large social media companies, such as Facebook and Twitter, from censoring the social media posts of users. The proposed “Stop Social Media Censorship Act” would make social media companies “liable for damages in civil lawsuits if they delete or censure religious speech or political speech or use an algorithm to “disfavor or censure” such speech”. Senator Gruters and congressional candidate Loomer hope that this legislation will protect the free speech rights of all Floridians on their personal social media accounts.
I think that this “Stop Social Media Censorship Act” will be very useful and important, especially this year. Because 2020 is the year of the next presidential elections that will go on in the United States, I believe that it is very important that all states enact this act so that every citizen has the right to voice their personal opinions on the presidential candidates. I think that large social media companies, such as Twitter and Facebook, are definitely infringing on our First Amendment rights that guarantee us the right to freely express our feelings and opinions. As long as the user’s social media posts are not harming, harassing, or discriminating against others, we should have the right to post what we want on our own personal social media accounts.
